How to choose a Sunblock?

Choosing a sunblock indeed can be a difficult task because there are lots of sunblocks out there but you need to find the one that best suits your skin and body.

So our team of editors has simplified this issue by highlighting the points that must be considered before buying any sunblocking product.

The manufacturing company

You should be aware of the brand that you are using. International or world-leading brands can be trusted due to their strict policies and loads of screenings.

Always prefer the sunscreens that are certified by the FDA. Any authentic certified brand can be used whenever you go out to look for a sunblock.

The manufacturing date

As they say, the fresher the better. It is in your best interest if you choose a sunscreen that has been freshly manufactured.

The freshness of the ingredients can go out with the passage of time especially if there are no strong preservatives used. So always buy a sunblock that has not been manufactured long ago.

The expiry date

Just like the date of manufacturing, the date of expiry is also very important. Besides, who wants to use an expired product on their face?

This thing is often neglected while buying so you make sure that you check the expiry date first and then go to check the other features. Not following this can cause serious damage to the skin.

SPF level

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It is a scale of numbers that determines the level of protection a sunscreen will provide you.

Simply, a higher number of SPF means more protection against the UVA and UVB rays and less number means relatively lower protection.

The recommended scale is SPF-30 and greater for average skin. It will protect your skin from getting into contact with cancer or any other skin disease.

The scale below the SPF-30 is used only for the treatment of sunburns and does not fight against the UV rays for a long span of time. They cannot handle the tough frequent sun rays.

Water-resistant

Always pick the sunscreen that provides you resistance against water and sweat. Sunscreens that are not water-resistant will wear off your skin as soon as you start to sweat or go swimming.

Water-resistant sunblocks are tough and do not wear off as long as 60 to 80 minutes. So it is recommended to buy a water-resistant one.

Paraben-free

Paraben is a preservative often used in skincare products. It does not let the product expire soon. Paraben is extremely dangerous because it can trigger cancer into the skin.

That is why go for a paraben-free sunblock to remain safe and cool.

One that suits your skin

It is quite important that you carefully check if the sunscreen is right for your skin type or not. For instance, if you have a nut allergy and the sunscreen contains nut extracts then it can irritate your skin or even worse, cause rashes.

If you happen to have sensitive skin then make sure to choose the sunscreen specifically made for sensitive skinned people. In addition to this, you can also choose one that is free from PABA or any other allergy-triggering ingredient.

If you have oily skin then choose an oil-free sunblock, and if you have dry patchy skin then choose one that moisturizes your skin in the blazing heat.

If you have an acne-driven skin then look for a sunblock that does not block your pores, and trigger your acne. If the product is non-comedogenic then it means it is right for your acne type skin.

Non-Stingy

After applying the sunblock, if it irritates or stings your skin then it might not be suitable for your skin type. Leave it at once.

Also, stop using a sunblock that causes irritation or sting into your eyes.

Check out the ingredients, do a bit research and do not buy sunblock in the future if you see the same ingredient included in it as well.

Children-friendly

If you want to purchase sunscreen for children or elderly people, then make sure that you choose the right one. People will younger or older ages have very delicate skin and they might get severe reactions.

For this, you need to choose such a sunblock that may contain natural ingredients or ingredients like zinc oxide that directly protects your skin from any harm. Also, buy sunblocks that are PABA and Paraben-free.

Prefer Sunscreen lotions

Most Sunscreen comes in lotion, gel stick or cream form, while some also come in sprays. It is preferred to use the lotion sunblocks as they have more tendencies to absorb into the skin as compared to the spray ones. A spot or two could be missed if you spray.

The spray can also cause an issue to those who have breathing issues like Asthma. The particles can get stuck in the nose and cause irritation or blockage. Inhaling the spray can also cause issues.

Sprays can also get into contact with the eyes and that can cause serious eye pain or temporary blindness.

Price vs Quality

Now if sunblock is pricey, it doesn’t mean that it would be effective as well. Do not fall for the prices and choose the one with the best qualities.

A sunscreen with a lower price tag can be more efficient than the one which is expensive.

Non-fragrant

Choose a sunblock that comes without a scent. Scent can trigger allergic reactions on sensitive skin. So always go for a no-scent or mildly-fragrant one.

Region

Last but not least, the most important thing is the region you live in. if you live in a region where the temperature is so high then you must go for higher SPF levels (recommended SPF-50 to SPF-70)

And if you live in a region where the sun doesn’t burn your skin then you should consider lower SPF levels. But even if mild temperatures, UV rays can still be harmful so you always have to be precautious and apply a good sunblock.

Best methods to use a Sunblock?

As discussed earlier, sunblock comes in the form of lotion, gel, spray or stick. Each of them is to be applied differently. We will show you the proper way to apply each of these items.

Moreover, there are few methods and precautions that need to be followed well if we want to see the sunblock do show its fullest.

Apply before going out

If you want your sunscreen to do its best then you need to apply it before going out in the open. Usually, people go to the beach first, then apply the sunblock but it is totally wrong. The sunblock needs it is time to absorb into your skin thoroughly.

Applying the sunblock before going out gives it the time to soak well into your body.

Apply everywhere

It is necessary to apply the sunblock to all the naked parts of the body that can be exposed to the sun. Do not leave any spots.

The main spots are your legs, face, neck, ears, and chest. Your back needs to have the sunblock completely applied too. Sunblock sprays or stick can help in this regard if you think that your hand cannot reach the spot.

Apply generously

You have to take a generous lump of sunblock cream, put it on the body and spread it nicely until it soaks up into your skin.

You can either put lotion in hand first then apply or you can apply it directly on the face too. Just make sure that you have every part covered and the whitish look ends up after you absorb the lotion well.

Use a moisturizer too

If you have dry skin then you need to apply some moisturizer too. This will allow the sunblock to be on the skin for more time without drying out.

You have to put your sunblock on first, let it absorb and then apply your moisturizer. As mentioned before, use a sunblock that has zinc-oxide in it to moisturize your dry skin with a sunscreen.

Use it daily

It isn’t quite necessary that you only need to apply sunblock if you are going out for a pool party. You should apply it daily.

Even if the weather is cold or cloudy, UV rays still find their ways to penetrate our skin even in the most unexpected of times. So caution is vital.

You should wear makeup that also provides UV protection.

Use lip sunblock

There are sunblocks specially made for the lips. The scorching heat can dry up your lips and sometimes regular petroleum jelly won’t be sufficient.

So it’s necessary to put on your lip sunblock an hour before going out. Take it with you as well so you can apply it from time to time.

Protect your eyes and scalp

Sun can severely burn the area under your eyes; it can cause irritation in the eyes or even eyesores. So it necessary to apply sunscreen around the eyes and wear good UV protected sunglasses.

UV rays can cause issues to your scalp as well. It is best if you sprinkle some sunscreen powder or gel onto the scalp to protect it. If you are bald then you must properly apply your sunscreen lotion.

Also, use a hat to cover your face and head from direct sunlight especially at peak time.

Re-apply in regular intervals

It is important that you take the sunblock with you. Dermatologists recommend that you should re-apply your sunscreen every 2 hours.

If you go swimming or you feel that you have excessive sweating on your face over time then don’t hesitate and put on your sunblock again.

Spray Sunblocks

Spray sunblocks are used in areas where cream does not fully reach the end but the spray can. You can spray the sunblock on areas like chest, arms, thighs, and legs or even your back.

To apply it properly, first spray it on the body then use your hands to let it absorb properly into the body. Do not spray directly on your face as it can cause irritation in eyes or serious breathing issues.

For that, you have to spray it first on your hands, and then rub it on the face. Also try to make sure that you do not apply it in windy areas as particles of spray might fly away with the gusts of wind.

Sunblock stick

Sunblock also comes in a stick. It is similar to a deodorant-stick. The advantage of this stick is that you can use it on delicate areas such as around your eyes.

Applying lotion or gel near the eyes can sometimes cause irritation so a sunblock stick would be the best choice to use. Simply roll the stick on the desired area and it will do its work.

Sunblock gel

Sunblock gel comes in the form of a fast-absorbing gel that can penetrate tough hairy areas. If you have a hairy chest then your cream might not reach the end of the skin.

So in that case, you need a sunblock gel to reach down to the skin. The procedure is simple, just squeeze the gel on your hands and rub it on the desired area and let it soak. If the gel is in stick form then make sure you roll it properly.

Cotton swabs

There are some delicate areas that you want to protect from the UV rays, such as the sides of your nails or your beard.

You can use cotton swabs for more precise absorption. Just dip it into the lotion and apply it well on the spots. The trick works perfectly.

Wear light cotton clothes

Always wear light-colored cotton clothes outdoors. Do not wear dark clothes as they can catch heat radiations and burn skin even if it is covered.

It is also very important that you should apply sunblock even if you don’t intend to take off your shirt, as the UV rays can still penetrate inside.
