Why is My Skin So Dry Even When I Moisturize?

Did you ever think why your skin is so dry even when you are moisturizing and hydrating it on a daily basis? This article is the continuation of the series where I am answering all of your questions.

Many girls ask me about their skin and one common concern is about the dryness of skin even after moisturization. Dry skin requires more attention and care.

Among the main reasons for dry skin are dead skin cells, using hot water on a frequent basis, not cleansing your skin, use of Cleanser that is not suited, drinking less water and over-cleansing.

I have seen many girls who use lotion and creams and that too from head to toe. Hydrating your skin and keeping it moisturized at all times is essential for healthy and glowing skin.

Skin Moisturizing Chart

Here is a chart for daily moisturizing routine for your skin according to your skin type;

Skin Type Moisturizer type How it works
Normal Skin Cleanser, Lotion Lotions are classical moisturizers for normal skin, Absorbs well.
Oily Skin Cleanser, Gel moisturizer Gel moisturizers are water-based and lightweight, Absorbs well on the skin without enhancing skin oil.
Dry Skin Thick Lotion, Soft Cream Soft creams are thick &heavier than lotions, best for moisturizing dry skin.
Sensitive Skin Balm, Vaseline ( not for acne sensitive skin) Balms or Vaseline has heavier textures, best for sensitive extremely dry skin types

The problem arises when you are hydrating and using everything in your limits and you have dry skin. Applying a moisturizing cream is very easy but you know what sort of ingredients should be used and with a proper technique.

Why is My Skin So Dry Even When I Moisturize?

Let us start discussing all the reasons that may be causing dry skin. You should always use a moisturizer according to your skin type, I suggest visiting a Dermatologist if you are curious to know more details about your skin type.

So, coming back to today’s question that is related to dry skin even after using lots of moisturizers. I will explain in detail here:

Check your Cleanser

Whenever someone asks me this question and they are concerned about their dry skin, I inquire about their skin cleanser. If you are using a hard cleaner then even after using creams and lotions, you will experience dry skin.

Even if you are using a top-quality product to clean your face and if that is not suitable for your skin, it can and will cause dry skin.

To prevent dry skin, I always recommend buying only moisturizing lotion and cleanser that is dedicated to dry skin. For dry skin, you need a cleanser that gives more hydration to your skin.

Dr. Abraiz, DuskySkin.com Dermatologist states, “Using the wrong cleanser can destroy your skin in the long run, stop using it if makes your skin dry”

Immediately Using Moisturizer after Cleansing skin

Once you are done cleansing your skin with the best-suited cleaner. I recommend using the warm water to clean your face and using cold water at the end. Just flush cold water 1-2 times on naked skin before using the cream or lotion.

There is always the best time when your skin needs moisturizer and that is immediately after cleaning your face. Now the question arises, do you have to use a moisturizer every time you wash your face. Yes, if you can, you must use a moisturizer when you wash your face with any scrub or a cleanser.

Dr. Abraiz, Dusky Skin, Dermatologist, recommends, “Using a moisturizer after taking bath is a must, when you take bath, you may end up with dry skin. During bathing, water evaporates and makes your skin dry. Immediately use a lotion or a good moisturizer when you bath”

CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion is available at Amazon.

In summer, you can always select lightweight moisturizers that are good for a sunny and bright day. You should always select as per your skin type.

Using the Wrong Moisturizer for your Skin type

Now thanks to the technology, the majority of patients that I receive have Googled all of their symptoms. Even before I ask any question, girls will start telling how they are moisturizing on a daily basis, etc.

The problem with the technology is that anyone can upload anything on the internet and Google will show those in search results.

This happens many times, even if you are using a moisturizer and doing everything that found on the internet and still you have dry skin.

You should access your skin type and use all products according to your skin. If you have dry skin, and you start using a moisturizer that is suited for oily skin, this will not be beneficial for your skin.

You should always select the best moisturizer that boots your skin hydration and delivers results with a better skin tone. You can even discuss your skin problems with our Online Dermatologist.

Exfoliate your Skin

How often do you exfoliate your skin? this is my question when someone says, why is my skin so dry even when I moisturize.

This is one of the most common reasons for dry skin. If you are not exfoliation your skin properly, your moisturizer will not be able to make your skin hydrated and healthy.

You should be very gentle when you exfoliate your skin and a minimum once a week is suggested for the majority of skin types. Select the most suited product for exfoliation your skin. If you have acne then go with an oil-free exfoliating scrub.

ACURA Brightening Scrub is one of the best products to exfoliate your skin.

You can also select chemical exfoliators and even with enzymes, they are better for making your skin more hydrated and healthy. If you are not doing exfoliation for your skin, it may cause dry and flaky skin in the long run. Exfoliation removes dead cells and brings a naturally healthy skin.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is always beneficial for yourself and your skin. I suggest all patients and readers drink at least 2-3 cups of water daily in addition to your normal routine, also drinking water at bedtime and when you wake is beneficial.

Dermatologists states, dry skin generates less oil and if you are not properly hydrated, you will be dry and dehydrated.

Over-cleansing your skin?

This is also among the top reasons when girls have dry when even when they moisturize at a regular schedule. If you are cleansing your skin more frequently, this may also cause dry skin.

DuskySkin.com did research last year where we evaluated 7000 patients with dry skin and one of the main reasons for dry skin was over and frequent cleansing. Whenever you feel dry skin after cleansing, this may be due to over-cleansing and damage to normal flora at the skin.

Frequent use of hot water

Using hot water for bath and cleaning your face more frequently will lead to dry skin. Duskyskin.com and Dr. Abraiz in her research found a co-relation in patients with dry skin and using hot water. It is recommended that you limit your shower timing, do not use water that is hot for your skin, it is better to mix it and use water at a decent temp.

After the shower, do not rub and dry with a towel, you should let it dry. Immediately use a moisturizer after taking a shower.

I have explained a few of the major reasons that make your skin dry even if you use lots of moisturizers. If you have any questions related to today’s topic, just shoot in the comment section below.
